Author: Fay Zaharopoulou,

In the vibrant and culturally rich city of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, resides a photographer whose lens captures the essence of human life and the bustling streets. Subhajit Das, born on February 7, 1986, in Kolkata, is a photographer and a storyteller who uses his camera to illustrate the beauty, chaos, and intimacy of the world around him. Though his academic background is in Physics, having completed his Bachelor's in Physics (Hons) from the University of Calcutta, it is through the art of photography that he truly expresses himself and reveals the beauty that often goes unnoticed in our daily lives.

From Physics to Photography: A Passionate Journey

While his professional career sees him educating young minds in a reputed school for the international curriculum (IBDP, IGCSE), his passion for photography has changed his perception of life. He began his photography journey in 2021, inspired by the works of masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Steve McCurry, Raghu Rai, Elliott Erwitt, and Rui Palha. Subhajit believes, as Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, that "the camera is a sketchbook, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity." This philosophy is evident in his approach to capturing the fleeting moments of everyday life.

The Essence of Street and Humanist Photography

His genre of choice, street and humanist photography, is a testament to his keen eye for the human condition. His photographs are not just images, they are narratives that delve into the lives of ordinary people, their struggles, joys, and the intricate tapestry of life that often goes unnoticed. Through his lens, Subhajit brings out his subject's raw and unfiltered emotions, making his work resonate on a deeply human level.

His approach to street photography is intuitive, capturing moments of spontaneity and authenticity. Whether it's a bustling market in Kolkata or a serene moment of reflection by the Ganges, Subhajit’s photographs tell stories that are both universal and deeply personal.

My name is Fay Zaharopoulou and I was born and lived my childhood in New Jersey, USA. My mother language is English and I have studied advertising and marketing. I have been a Meetings Coordinator and Author of Moments Collective since 2023.

My love and passion for photography began as a child when my parents bought me my first camera. It was a Polaroid which made me feel so thrilled since I could instantly see what I had photographed. Since then, I haven’t stopped taking photographs, by any means that could be used.

I am self-taught and have taken part in a few photography exhibitions.
