Curator's Note
The purpose of the photographic exhibition "Man and Place – Salamina" is to introduce the island to new social groups that are unaware of its significance and to enhance expressiveness through the duality of art and culture in the local community.
The people of Salamina identify themselves through visual communication. The themes and ideas presented in the photographs vary widely. They showcase contemporary social and environmental issues, autobiographical approaches, customs and traditions in a modern Salamina, as well as everyday life and experiential perspectives on the island's history from its residents.
Emotions are expressed spontaneously in the art of photography. In a community, art plants the seeds for education and freedom of expression.
The photographs taken in 2024 represent a collective outcome of the Seminar on Applied Conceptual Photography, led by Hypatia Kornarou. The place and the contemporary people of Salamina narrate stories of the past and present through the visual narrative contained in the conceptual documentation.
The islanders are surrounded by the sea. It is the sea that encapsulates every aspect of Salamina, with the saltiness of a collective memory in each of its stories. It is the journey that occurs when one approaches or departs from its port.
Those photographed are residents of Salamina who volunteered to participate. All shots were taken exclusively in locations on the island. In the evolution of visually capturing an idea, the effort often focused on highlighting the cultural heritage of the area. Human stories come to life, describing conditions, confessing memories, and expressing emotions. However, they timelessly bear witness to the historical past of an island rooted in antiquity.
Contemporary youth seek knowledge about the customs and traditions of the island as well as about the figures who stood out in its history. Thus, they tune into the pulse and declare their presence in activities that connect yesterday with today.
